When the SS Republic sank in 1865, mustard was an indispensable enhancement to the 19th-century diet. Dating back thousands of years to early Roman times the popular condiment’s zesty flavor helped disguise the taste of food that was not always fresh due to lack of refrigeration.
A large quantity of approximately 300 ribbed glass barrel-shaped bottles were recovered from the SS Republic proof that this pungent condiment was a much sought-after staple and would surely have been valued in post–Civil War New Orleans.
Whereas every effort has been made to choose the best examples of shipwreck artifacts for our collectors, some blemishes and imperfections will be evident due to the harsh conditions the pieces have been subjected to during their years in the deep ocean.
