Dive Deeper into the World of Deep-Ocean

Shipwreck Exploration!

Launched over 150 years ago, the SS Republic experienced a remarkable career with pioneering voyages across the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, heroic battles in the American Civil War and life-threatening encounters with ferocious weather – which eventually sank her in 1865. Now the SS Republic’s legacy lives on as the ‘star’ of Odyssey’s travelling exhibit SHIPWRECK! Pirates & Treasure, freshly refurbished and now open at G.WIZ - The Science Center in Sarasota, FL but only until July 31, 2011, so if you're in the area, make plans to see it!

Not only does the exhibit bring to life the SS Republic’s incredible maritime journey, but it also offers visitors the unique opportunity to dive into the enchanting world of deep-ocean shipwreck exploration. More than 500 shipwreck artifacts are on display many of which are complemented with high-resolution photographs depicting their recovery from the deep ocean. Riveting graphics showcased throughout the exhibit detail extraordinary shipwreck stories, the amazing technology Odyssey uses to find shipwrecks and the impact that these discoveries have made worldwide.

Brave visitors, both young and old, can experience high-powered winds in the hurricane tubes to understand the force of nature that sank the SS Republic and many other ships throughout history. They can delve into the SS Republic photomosiac which consists of more than 2,500 digital images that have been “stitched” together to create the large-scale excavation map of the wreck site. Also on display is a life-sized model of ZEUS, the eight-ton Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) that makes deep-sea archaeology possible. Here visitors can operate a ROV manipulator arm to try their skill at picking up treasure from the ocean floor – similar to what Odyssey’s ROV team does at an actual wreck site. Additional games offer the chance to locate the SS Republic, discover and uncover shipwreck artifacts.

The remarkable life of the SS Republic, the most famous Civil War-era shipwreck is featured in vivid detail throughout the exhibit. Visitors can travel back in time to revisit the ship’s lively maritime career and follow her through her last voyage, the fateful hurricane and sinking, and Odyssey’s discovery of the site more than 140 years later. The heroic stories of the shipwreck survivors who witnessed the tragic loss of the ship are highlighted and hundreds of artifacts and treasure coins recovered from the shipwreck 1,700 feet deep are showcased.

The demand for SHIPWRECK! has been extraordinary since its inception in 2005 and recent exhibit upgrades have been integrated to augment the visitors’ experience. The format presents exciting new multi-media opportunities to further explore the key elements essential to shipwreck search and discovery. Cutting-edge science, cool tools and robotics, pioneering historical research and deep-ocean archaeology are presented with hands-on, visually engaging and highly informative displays. Also showcased is the art and science of conservation with creative graphics that present the fundamental steps involved in preserving shipwreck artifacts – so that future generations can continue to enjoy and learn from Odyssey’s fascinating shipwreck finds. The new exhibit content features the addition of several of Odyssey’s historic shipwreck discoveries, including, a 17th-century English Channel wreck yielding an extraordinarily rare wooden carpenter’s rule which is on display for the first time in the United States. Also highlighted is intriguing information and exclusive images from Odyssey’s discovery of the 1744 wreck of Balchin’s HMS Victory and the treasure-laden "Black Swan" site.

Already visited by over a half a million people before debuting in Sarasota, Odyssey's SHIPWRECK! Pirates & Treasure captivates the visitors’ attention with its uniquely-themed content designed to engage, inspire and educate both kids and adults alike.

We would love to know know what you think of the updated exhibit!
