Gold Coins Carpet the SS Republic Shipwreck Site

The gold coins carpeting the SS Republic shipwreck 1,700 feet deep were recovered during the archaeological excavation of the site which began in November of 2003. The operation, conducted entirely by advanced robotics, was the first of its kind performed at such depths. The excavation produced over 51,000 gold and silver coins, many in mint condition and never circulated.
