Blue Shell-edged Platters

The "Blue China" shipwreck site yielded a large cargo of mid-19th century earthenware. The largest concentration of ceramics stacked on the seabed was blue shell-edged flatware including soup bowls, such as this example, plates, and platters. Blue Shell-edge was the most fashionable and enduring style ever produced by the English ceramics industry. These distinctive whiteware pieces with incised, blue-decorated rims, inspired the shipwreck codename "Blue China".
